Sony BDP-N460 Review

Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray disc player can be seen as an extension to missing or limited capabilities of Sony Playstation 3.

When you turn on the device, the first thing that you will notice is how similar menu looks like on Sony BDP-N460 and Playstation 3. The are almost identical. The one significant difference are the video options that show the list of all supported on line video providers.

For me, Playstation 3 is a missed opportunity. With limited number of games I thought of using it as multimedia device. However, lousy Bluetooth remote controller and lack of supported on line video services, brought me back into reality, and forced me to buy a dedicated Blu-ray player.

One pleasant surprise was support for Amazon on Demand. In fact, I can say that this was a tipping point for buying this device rather then some other.

Sometimes during the playback of on line content picture would freeze for more than 20 seconds. Since I have a sufficient bandwidth, and also didn't have this issue when playing movies on other devices, I can suspect that this problem is related to size of buffer implemented in Sony BDP-N460.

This device features Bravia sync, that only work with compatible Sony TV sets. Waiting time for loading up is normal, but I would like that it is a little bit faster.

Besides network interface, there is also a USB port that can be used to play content for USB drives.

I always feared that firmware upgrade can brick this unit, but I have to say that firmware upgrades worked without any problems out of the box.

Picture quality is very good. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of upscaled DVD picture. The only complain I have is the low resolution of the system menu, XCross. It would look so much better in Full HD resolution!

Since I have been using this device in my bedroom, I was afraid that the status light would irritate me. However, this is not a case: they are barely noticeable and can be further adjusted from the system menu.

Sony BDP-N460 is a great Blu-ray disc player with support for tons of on line content, great picture quality and affordable price. I highly recommend this unit to anyone!
