Review Of The LG 55" LED-LCD HDTV 55LE5400

The LG 55" LED-LCD HDTV, priced at $1, 899 to $2, 499, combines amazing picture quality for a relatively affordable price. In the competition for best HDTV, competitors are offering more to the consumer at a lower price. In this article, we will look at the pros and cons of the TV, as well as picture quality, ease of use and overall value. The details and opinions of this review are based on personal experience from owning this TV.

Tech Specs

The LG 55" features a slim (1-1/4" deep) design, 1080p HD display, internet capable technology, built-in speakers, multiple inputs for nearly every third party device, 4 HDMI inputs, PC connect, Ethernet port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and a 3:2 cinema like display.

What are the best features?

We enjoyed the large screen with a very shallow profile. Having upgraded from a tube TV, the 1-1/4" deep design was excellent for bringing such a large TV in a moderately sized room without looking bulky. The picture display is amazing. The first movie watched on this TV was The Wolfman (2010); the movie was played via a Blu-ray player on our Sony PlayStation 3. The HD graphics were quickly realized during the movies stunning imagery and action shots. Coupled with Bose surround sound, the experience was similar to theaters. The other standout feature is the PC connect feature, which allows users to hook up their laptops or desktops to the screen. This aspect was very cool for hooking up our family laptop to the TV for a large screen experience. However, this feature is not used too often, but it is a cool extra.

Size

The 55" LG LED-LCD HDTV is a very big TV. The TV does not feel crowded in our 22 x 13.5 square foot family room, but would feel cramped in a smaller room. Keep in mind that when choosing an LED HDTV that it should fit your room, a TV too big or too small will appear out of place and awkward.

What did we not like?

There is not a lot to dislike on this TV; however, we did have some display issues. When using non-HD cable, the picture shrinks itself to fit on the screen as to not appear distorted. This reduces the actual viewing space by about 8", which is considerable considering the size of the screen. However, this is a common problem with most HDTVs and is fixed by using HD only channels.

Overall

Overall, I would recommend this moderately priced TV to anyone looking for an HDTV upgrade. The picture quality is superb, controls are very easy and intuitive, the included speakers are excellent and the overall satisfaction is very high. The variety of extras, whether used or not, are extensive for the price and should be factored in your decision on this purchase.
