Top Questions About Google TV
Google TV is a lot more than just having web access shown on your big screen LED LCD high definition, big screen television set. Google TV is a joint venture between Google, Sony, Intel and Logitech to bring the power of the Android-powered smart phone to your television. Depending upon the applications (apps) that the Android operating system receives from it's die hard programming fans, the same ones who wrote all of the fancy and fun apps for smartphones like the Droid and HTC Hero.
Some top questions about Google TV include, but in no way are limited to;
* How much? What will be the final cost of a complete setup? Google TV will need an extra component aside from the set top box. Logitech was selected to make the peripheral devices, and the first is a wireless keyboard that works as a remote control. The keyboard runs about $100, and the set top box is rumoured to be about $150 to $300 USD. Subscription fees are rumoured to be minimal, possibly under $20 per month, if they do indeed charge them.
* Will I need to buy a new TV for Google TV to work properly. No and yes. Sony is presently working on a model of television that is based on the Bravia, and intended solely for Google TV. Prices have yet to be determined, as have the release dates. However, any digital television will work just fine for now.
* Will there be television channels included? Of course there will. With Google's genius marketing and advertisement revenue stability, the television shows should be much clearer and better sounding that satellite or cable television, as Google TV will be broadcast over Broadband. The channels will be lining up to get a piece of the Google TV financial pie.
* Will it replace my expensive satellite or cable television? No and yes. Google TV will have a limited number of channels streamed through the set top box via broadband connection at first. As time goes by, though, more and more channels will be jumping on the new technology bandwagon, and Google's proven track record for getting lots of advertising revenue. It could be possible that one day, Google TV could have all channels ready for playing.
* How will I input text? Text is inputted through the remote control keyboard, made by Logitech. It will be small enough to be portable, and big enough to make inputting text a lot easier than on smartphones.
* Speaking of smartphones, will they have access to Google TV, and vice-versa? Yes, it is rumoured that Android-powered smartphones will be able to function in some manner on Google TV.
* Will 3D TV be supported? Not yet, as they are waiting for the exorbitant costs to come down to earth. As it is, the required 3D TV viewing glasses alone cost from $200 to over $600 a pair, and if four pairs are needed for the family, that could get pretty expensive, very fast. However, with the apps that can be written, if you do have a 3D TV, Google will undoubtedly "have an app for that", and 3D technology will follow if the television sets sell very well.
* Why not just connect my laptop to my television, and watch TV shows streamed from thousands of websites? Google TV is much more than just watching television, just seeing your laptop's screen on your television, or just surfing the Internet. With the proper apps downloaded and running, you could be able to see who is calling you on your TV screen, hold web video-conference calls, and watch live TV shows. With the apps that will soon flood the Apps Store, more and more will be able to be done on this Android-powered television set top box.
* What is the biggest selling point? Google TV will have thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of apps for doing different things on your television, and most apps should work in conjunction with other apps. And, all of the Google mainstays, like Google Street View, Google Maps, Google Live, and all of the other popular Google programs will be accessible to Google TV.
So, give Google TV a try, there is always the 30 day, money back guarantee if you do not like it enough to keep a hold of it. But with manufacturers with the reputations of Intel, Sony, Logitech and Google, you just know that Google TV is going to revolutionize the television viewing experience.
